A teacher at Night Raven College who instructs subjects such as the History of Magic. Despite his unapproachable air, he is always accompanied by his cat, Lucius, whom he clearly adores.

He is a strict figure who intensely dislikes dozing off or tardiness, yet his classes are long and often described as "boring." While he is respected by serious students like Riddle, the school is full of problem children—habitual slackers, the wildly capricious, and those who act like know-it-alls regarding history—making him perhaps the person with the most headaches.

He appears to be close enough with the Headmaster to share tea together.

His refusal to tolerate backtalk (or even witty retorts) has earned him a reputation as a "hardhead." According to Sam, he is a veteran with a conservative mindset; this often leads to clashes of opinion with Crewel. However, since they frequently play chess, they seem to be evenly matched in skill. They apparently even got into an argument recently over whether they were "cat people" or "dog people" (which suggests they get along quite well).
