While he has a generally mild personality and humbly downplays his role by saying things like "there isn't much for a vice-housewarden to do" or "it's mostly just for show," he is actually highly competent; he can instantly understand exactly what Riddle wants to convey just by being called upon. He also has a grasp of the Queen of Hearts' rules (though he doesn't know them all by heart), noting that many of them are confusing.

He is caring and rarely gets angry. However, when he *does* lose his temper, his smile vanishes; according to Cater, "once he gets his back up, it takes a long time for him to cool down." Furthermore, true to his villainous inspiration, he displays a streak of sadism—though not an excessive one. He has quite a complex personality and harbors a cunning, manipulative side; he often wears a closed-mouth, knowing smile and occasionally flashes a rather mean-spirited look.

Yet, he rarely reveals his true inner thoughts through words or facial expressions, leaving others guessing what lies behind his smile. Perhaps in an effort to avoid conflict, he tries to please everyone—a tendency that sometimes ends up complicating situations further.
